Performance Tests
DL-GNA’s mission to maintain and improve the breed’s versatile hunting abilities is measured through tests established by the JGHV. The JGHV tests evaluate the dog’s natural abilities, trainability, and suitability as a versatile hunting companion. In accordance with DLV breeding regulations, DLs must pass the VJP and HZP breed tests prior to producing a litter. The VGP performance test demonstrates the capabilities of the fully-trained hunting dog for any task whether it be in the field, forest, or water, together with obedience and sound temperament in hunting scenarios.
-
The VJP scores a puppy’s natural abilities in the following subjects:
Tracking
Use of Nose
Search
Pointing
Cooperation
Additionally, the eyes, teeth, and bodily characteristics are evaluated along with temperament and gunfire stability.
-
The HZP test is run in the fall after the VJP. The puppy is scored in all the same subjects as the VJP plus the following additional subjects:
Water work (gunfire stability, mark and blind duck retrieves, duck search)
Retrieving (fur and feather retrieves)
Obedience
The physical characteristics and temperament of the dog are evaluated again.
-
The VGP is a test of the finished gun dog. Various natural ability and trained subjects are tested in the following categories:
Forest
Water
Field
Obedience
The VGP tests the dog’s mental stability and strength of character over two days covering all tasks that are expected of a truly versatile gun dog.
