How to Submit Hip X-Rays
Please carefully follow these instructions to receive an evaluation of your Deutsch Langhaar's hip, shoulder, and elbow joints. Hip evaluations are required for breeding certification; shoulders/elbows are optional but recommended.
Note: DLs must be at least 12 months of age on the date of the x-ray exam
Questions? Contact the DL-GNA Hip Dysplasia Coordinator.
1. Pre-Complete X-Ray Evaluation Documents
Download the X-Ray Evaluation Form and fill out the top section electronically for best legibility. Reference the Translation of X-Ray Evaluation Form and your dog’s Ahnentafel to ensure you enter the correct data for each field. Ask the HD-Coordinator if you have any questions.
Download the Instructions for Your Vet document and fill out the labeling data for your vet to use on the X-ray image. It helps to make a separate card with exactly the text you want added to each radiograph image. Correct image labeling is critical.
Print all three documents and bring them with you to your appointment along with your dog’s Ahnentafel so the vet can verify your dog’s identity.

2. Make an Appointment with Your Veterinarian
Your regular veterinarian should be able to complete the hip x-ray as it is identical to the view taken for OFA evaluations. Please be sure that your vet is willing/able to label the image with the required data and provide electronic copies of the radiographs in jpg or dcm format.
At this time, shoulder and elbow X-rays are optional. These are not as common for veterinarians to collect so bring along the Instructions for Your Vet document which describe the joint alignment requirements.
Note: All DLs must be sedated while radiographs are taken.
3. Have the Hips (Shoulders/Elbows are Optional) X-Rayed
When you arrive at your vet's office, give them the X-ray form, the X-ray form translation, the vet instructions, and your DL's Ahnentafel.
The vet must fill in the middle section of the form which asks them to validate your dog's registration number, confirm a few questions (all boxes must be checked), fill out their contact information and date, and sign the form. The bottom section of the form is reserved for the results of the evaluation in Germany.
Please stress that the image labeling is critical. They must add all of the required data to the x-ray image prior to submitting it for evaluation. Show them the labeling information and ask to verify it on the images at the end of the appointment. Don’t leave the office until you’ve checked the labeling.
4. Submit your X-Ray(s) to the HD-Coordinator
After your vet visit, email the x-ray images and your completed form to the DL-GNA HD Coordinator. The Coordinator will check to ensure the images and form are completed correctly before submitting to the vet’s office in Germany.
If everything is correct, results are typically emailed back to the HD Coordinator and forwarded to the owner and breeder within a few weeks.
5. Submit the X-Ray Processing Fee
You can submit payment online by going to the DL-GNA's Online Store. The X-Ray processing fee helps to cover the cost of the German veterinary evaluation and the recording of the results.
